New Decemberists Album - "The King is Dead"

When listening to the Decemberists one can always expect to be transported to a sonically old-time world rife with bagpipes, acoustic guitars, and stories about fair maidens and gentlemen pursuing forbidden love, and The King is Dead (out January 18) is no exception.

Though The King is Dead indulges heavily in the romantic, this LP pays much more homage to the American roots-folk tradition.  Rich harmonicas, fast tempos, and acoustic guitars are the mediums by which songwriter Colin Meloy and his bandmates regale us with their melodic tales of love, loss, and nature.

I am yet to find a Decemberists album I was not a fan of and The King is Dead is no exception.  It is a nice, relaxing record that really feels like a nice slice of warm Americana pie.  I highly recommend giving it a listen (in its entirety or by song) and you can do so here at NPR's 'First Listen'.
