New Kanye Vid Leaks!

Here's a still shot from Kanye West's new video, "Monster" (that's him carrying a head and no, it's not Taylor Swift's), featuring a veritable cornucopia of the spookiest hip-hop talent: Rick Ross, Jay-Z, and Nicki Minaj (x2).  It might scare the s**t out of you, but that's sort of Kanye's thing now if you think about it...Enjoy! (Thanks to Pitchfork for the still)

Byrds of Paradise -- 'Teenage Symphonies'

Indie rockers Byrds of Paradise are back with their next effort and it is rockin'.  Equal parts Silversun Pickups and the Cure, 'Teenage Symphonies' blends overdrive-drenched, soaring shoe-gaze distorted guitars with some more conventional punk/ska melodies.  This single's coming, but here's a classic in the meantime..."Rowena"

"Retrosuperfuture"

I know, it's a few days old, but I'm sure most of you haven't heard it yet. If you haven't download Rick Ross's latest mixtape Ashes To Ashes, do so here. For now, this joint off the new mixtape featuring Wiz Khalifa should hold you over.

The Wild - "Phoenix"

The Wild is an amalgamation of rock, hip/hop, ska, and metal genres all the way from New Zealand.  Their first LP, Set Ourselves Free, was a solid effort and this new track, "Phoenix", is a banger.  Enjoy. (Courtesy of P&P)

Gary Indiana's finest

Rising gangster rap star Freddie Gibbs, is from Gary Indiana and has a can do but won't do attitude. Gibbs keeps it gangster and shows that by his lyrics, pride and the way he reps it. Not many rappers have a sound like Gibbs: original. Freddie Gibbs is a late comer in 2010 but somebody to watch out for in 2011. Thank Good* Fella Media for this.

Web Exclusive

Tavis Smiley is responsible for this Web Exclusive featuring: QD3, Bishop Lamont, Devi Dev, Talib Kweli & Wiz Khalifa.

LANDMARK Community Radio Act

Along with the repealing of the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy', the House and Senate both passed the Community Radio Act on December 18th.  The Community Radio Act will, as the Huffington Post reports, allow for the creation of new non-commercial stations on American airwaves-- a number that could reach to the hundreds or even thousands.  In a press release, the Future of Music Coalition said, "The addition of more Low Power FM (LPFM) stations will increase local civic engagement, diversify the airwaves, support local music and culture, assist during emergencies, expand religious expression, and provide a platform for the voices of underrepresented communities to be heard."

The bill states that the new stations must be FCC-approved "based on the needs of the local community" and that certain restrictions are put in place to "prohibit any applicant from obtaining a low-power FM license if the applicant has engaged in any manner in the unlicensed operation of any station in violation of section 301 of the Communications Act of 1934 (47 U.S.C. 301)."

Many LPFM stations have come into existence since 2001, some of which being run solely by the U.S. Government.  With the passing of this legislation we can now expect to see many more privately run LPFM stations out there.  This is a fairly major victory for aspiring broadcasters and should be seen as such.  I look forward to the successes of the new radio stations hitting the air.

RIP Teena Marie

Over the weekend the music world lost an icon--R&B legend Teena Marie has died.  A long-time Motown stalwart, Marie's powerful yet sultry vocals helped to define the R&B genre and paved the way for her to become both a successful writer and producer.  Teena, from everybody at The Music Box, the world's a little less funky without you in it--you will be missed.

Gangster Gibbs

Freddie "Gangster" Gibbs hooks up with Peter Parker for an interview on Parker Vision and talks about his "Can but won't do attitude" and his love for the cops (If you know anything about Freddie Gibbs, then you know he is from Gary Indiana, and that he really doesn't love cops)

Black and Yellow year?

Recently, Pittsburgh has had something other than sports to cheer for; Wiz Khalifa. Khalifa took a big step in the game by signing with Atlantic Records in July of this year, and releasing his Steeler devoted single "Black and Yellow" . To most of the 412 or Steeler Nation, Wiz Khalifa has been an idol and a major supporter as well as exposure for the city in more ways than the recent years sports success. Khalifa claims to rep the "Burgh" also known as Pittsburgh, where many other artists are on the rise, including Rostrum Record product Mac Miller. When all is said and done, the Steel city will be forever grateful for the publicity that Wiz Khalifa has brought to them.

Complex: The 25 Best Albums of 2010

In a recent story by Complex Magazine, both Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa were featured in their 25 Best Albums of 2010.

#14
With the release of Pilot Talk II, that makes two successful mixtapes on the year for Curren$y. Give Spitta his props, he's come a long way since the early days when he was signed to Cash Money, now he's working constantly with one of the fastest rising stars today, Wiz Khalifa. Thanks to his hard work and determination Curren$y is being noticed, Complex ranks Pilot Talk II as the 14th best album of 2010.

 #8
Taking the 8th spot is Wiz Khalifa and his 2010 Kush and OJ mixtape. Don't get me wrong, this is a great album, but nothing like his previous work. Wiz will have to step it up in 2011 with his new album if he wants to compete with the up and coming talent in 2011. Props on this album Wiz and best of luck to you on your next project.

Wiz Khalifa x Game

Wiz Khalifa stepped in the studio with Game to lay down tracks for Games upcoming album R.E.D which has no release date. I sense a good combination here, something to think about in the future?

Movie in the future for Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa?

According to the Boss, or better known as Snoop Dogg, he revealed on December 23 via twitter, that him as well as Wiz Khalifa will be appearing in a movie. Here's the tweet:

Gazmo The Gr8

Gazmo is new to the scene, at least the east coast. Gazmo is an emerging artist from the west coast. With west coast style and flow, Gazmo uses his west coast counterpart and super producer Johnny Juliano to create ear pleasing party and smoking tracks. With Gazmo the Gr8 dropping his mixtape iBeast earlier this year, he now has two successful mixtapes, making him in my opinion, the artist to look for in the coming year. Enjoy this track over Wiz Khalifas Black and Yellow, remixed by Gazmo The Gr8

Talib Kweli album in the works

Talib Kweli released his tracklist a week ago for his upcoming album Gutter Rainbows, which drops January 25th. Haven't heard any snippets from this album but he has released the artwork. Spotted at 2DOPEBOYZ

Tolly- Tollywood (Mixtape)

Tolly from Taylor Gang with his new album Tollywood. Tolly tends to be overshadowed by Taylor Gang King, Wiz Khalifa. It may take a few more CDs or Wiz Khalifa video appearances for this Taylor Gang member to get his chance at a major label deal, but his Cd, Tollywood has a little bit of a Prince Of The City 2 feel, which was part of the foundation of Wiz Khalifa's early success, so he's on the right track. Kick back, relax, and keep this CD on replay. If you don't have it be sure to grab it from Dat Piff "The Authority in Free Mixtapes"
