SXSW 2011 Wrap-Up

The 2011 SXSW Music Festival was earlier this month and the who's who of the indie and hip-hop music communities were in attendance along with a smorgasbord of the most promising independent and unsigned up and comers in the music world today, so we broke our coverage of the event down accordingly.

The SXSW Festival-goers were treated to a host of established indie acts from (the newly reformed) Death From Above 1979, Bright Eyes, the Strokes (shown below), the Boxer Rebellion (shown below), Bombay Bicycle Club, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart (shown below), and the Joy Formidable (shown below) [those are some of my favorites, but this entire lineup was fantastic, as usual].

Not to be outdone, many established and up and coming names from the hip-hop world also graced the many stages at SXSW.  Big Krit tore the stage down and linked up with Spitta at Mohawk performing their collabo "Glass House" as well as solo tracks like "Country Shit".  Just touched down while Spitta performed "Famous", a few cuts off Smokee Robinson, and brought out Roddy and Trade to do "Roasted". Kanye was over at the VEVO tent putting on a GOOD show that included Pusha T, Jay-Z, and John Legend, while Bun B performed at Kiss & Fly and managed to get Wiz, Big Sean and Trae the Truth on stage to perform "Phone Numbers". Odd Future tore a couple of sets down and managed to bust a fan's head open, Diddy managed to find his way on stage with the new jacks and Lil B and did a performance of his own that included the classics "Victory" and "All About the Benjamins". Needless to say it was an epic event. Here are a few performances that took place over the 10 day long festival.

Bright Eyes Live at SXSW (Video)

SXSW Music Festival just ended and unfortunately, there's simply too many performances to cover all at once, so I'll try to chip away at it as much as possible.  So, I am pleased to bring you Bright Eyes' complete set from SXSW.  Below is the video for his performance of "An Attempt to Tip the Scales" and if you click HERE, you can watch the rest of his set, and yes, it's chocked full of classics.  Enjoy.

Snoop Dogg, Diddy, Warren G, and the Dogg Pound Pay Homage to Nate Dogg

Just as the SXSW Music Festival was set to begin, the music world was taken aback by the sudden loss of hip-hop guru, Nate Dogg.  But in honor of the legend, during the Best of the West Showcase at Venue 222, a tribute show was put on featuring some of Nate's closest friends from the hip-hop community including Snoop Dogg, Diddy, Warren G, and the Dogg Pound (Daz Killinger and Kurrupt).  Here's a video from the performance.  (Thanks to MTV)

Violence Erupts @ SXSW

Coming into SXSW this year, one of the central highlights of the event was supposed to be Death From Above 1979's much anticipated reunion show.  But during the show Saturday night, violence erupted between concert go-ers and local police who were acting as security for the event.  The violence escalated so quickly between police and the public that a twenty-minute break was taken by DFA1979 in order to quell rowdy behavior.  The police went so far as to bring out the tasers and mace to subdue concert go-ers and in some cases, resorted to violence themselves to stop the 'rioting'.  After the break, the show went on without a hitch and crowds were dispersed quickly so as to stop anymore rowdy behavior.  Videos from the show are below.

New SXSW Artist Line-up

The South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX is regularly home to some of the best and brightest in the music world and this year is no different.  This year the festival will have some familiar faces such as Bright Eyes and the Kills along with up and comers Big K.R.I.T. and Surfer Blood just to name a couple.  The festival runs from March 16-20 and is an absolute can't miss (like it is every year).  The full list of performers is here but a few notables are listed below.  Thanks to Pitchfork
